OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS - Despite shooting 31-over par, the Denver men's golf team finished in a second place tie with Kansas State, 8-shots off the pace, in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Wichita State at 23-over par won the tournament at the Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kansas. Host school UMKC ended up in fourth position, 11-shots back. The tournament was cut to just 36-holes due to weather.
The Pioneers were in fourth place after the first round which was played in brutal conditions with non-stop rain and high winds. The weather cleared up in the second round but the high winds remained.
"Today was very windy and the course was playing very soft," said Denver head coach Erik Billinger. "The scores were definitely high due to the weather."
For the final round, DU shot +13, which was better than their first round score by 5-strokes.
"I think collectively, just hanging in there with the tough conditions was a positive," Billinger stated. "I'm proud of the way all the guys handled the conditions."
Individually, Patrick Frodigh led Denver, shooting 6-over par, good for a tie for 6th place. Pep Angles of Central Arkansas won the event, shooting an impressive 3-under par.
Freshman Jake Kelley finished +7, Petter Mikalsen +8, Matt Codd +10 and rounding out the DU scores was Johan Werge who shot +23.
"I think this week taught us to deal with the wind and control the trajectory and spin of the ball with the high winds and soft greens," Billinger said.
The Pioneers final tournament of the fall season will be the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, California. The three round event commences on October 30th at the Stockton Golf and Country Club.
