[13/11] Denver Falls to [RV/19] Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. - The University of Denver hockey team fell to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in Saturday night's series finale 6-1 at AMSOIL Arena.



The Pioneers are now 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in NCHC play.



Denver was led by goalie Evan Cowley (Evergreen, Colo.) who made 34 saves on the evening. Nolan Zajac (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored his first goal of the season, which was also his fourth point in four games this season.



The Pioneers got off to a quick start outshooting the Bulldogs 6-0 to start the period. Cowley was great in between the pipes making 18 first period saves. Cowley made a few sensational highlight worthy saves in the period to keep the game scoreless.



Denver trailed for the first time all-season when the Bulldogs Karson Kuhlman got a shorthanded breakaway goal at 5:05 of the second period. UMD got a second goal on a pass by Austyn Young that slipped through the crease and looked to go off a Pioneer skate.



Senior defenseman Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, B.C.) received a major penalty and a game misconduct at 16:05 mark of the second period for checking from behind. Minnesota-Duluth capitalized 26 seconds into the 5:00 power play when Cal Decowski jammed a puck past Cowley.



In the third period Nick McCormack made it 4-0 for the Bulldogs after Cowley made a save on Alex Iafallo. The Bulldogs added two other power play goals in the period.



Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis) and Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) both picked third assists on the season on Zajac's third period power play goal.



Freshman Tanner Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta) made 8 saves in relief of Cowley.



The Pioneers return home to take on (6/6) Boston College in a two-game set next Friday the 31st at 7:36 p.m. MT a game that can be seen on ROOT Sports and Saturday November 1st at 7:07 p.m. MT which will be on Pioneer Vision. Audio will be available on ESPN Radio 102.3. Next weekend is also Homecoming Weekend.
