DU Men's Golf In First Place At Pacific Invitational

Oct. 31, 2014

Second Round Results

STOCKTON, CALIF - After shooting a field best second round 6-under par, the University of Denver men's golf team sits in first place with one round to play in the Pacific Invitational at the Stockton Golf and Country Club. The Pioneers are at 5-under followed by Grand Canyon University and Washington State, both at 4-under par.

The Pioneers entered the second round in fifth place, 10-shots off the pace set by Washington State, but quickly made up ground on Friday.

DU was led in the second round by steady sophomore Petter Mikalsen (Stavenger, Norway) who shot 5-under for the day and sits atop the overall leaderboard by one shot over six other golfers and two shots better than teammate Chris Korte (Littleton, Colo). The freshman followed up his excellent first round with a 2-under 69 to reside in eighth place at 3-under par.

"Awesome round by Petter shooting a 5-under par 66," said Denver head coach Erik Billinger. "And solid playing by everyone else. Overall a solid day for the Pios and we are looking forward to tomorrow."

The anticipated poor weather held off, for the most part, in the second round. Light rain appeared late in the round with only five teams still on the course. Rain is expected overnight in Stockton, California with morning showers predicted for Saturday's third and final round. The forecast calls for clearing in the afternoon.
