Denver 2-3 Omaha
DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team capped off a five-match homestand, and a stretch of eight-straight matches in the state of Colorado with a 3-2 loss to the University of Nebraska Omaha on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
"Giving up the lead at home is never how you want to start out," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "I thought in the first half we were so lackluster, and didn't play with a lot of passion. It didn't matter who we played today, with us not playing our game. Give them credit, they are good up top, and put a pressure on you, but we gave up three bad goals today."
Omaha got on the board in the 16th minute on a Hannah Wampler free kick from 25 yards. Wampler's strike went into the upper right side of the goal, and off the hands of junior Tina Vargas (Issaquah, Wash.) and into the back of the net.
Freshman forward Angelica Pacheco (Taos, N.M.) came off the bench to play 22 minutes in the first half, netting her first career goal in the 42nd minute off assists from sophomore Lilly McSwain (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) and redshirt-sophomore Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.). Garzelloni and McSwain connected three passes together down the left side before McSwain sent it in at the 12 to Pacheco, who took a calm touch and slid her shot into the lower left corner to equalize.
The Mavericks made it 2-1 against the run of play, as their first shot of the second half, in the 60th minute found the back of the net on a counter attack. Chelsi Rohloff scored her seventh goal of the season, touching the ball past a sliding Vargas before finishing into the open net. Omaha's Marin Dregelid was credited with the assist on the go-ahead goal.
Sophomore Brooke Boothe (Ontario, Calif.) found Denver's second equalizer of the afternoon from 18-yards out into the lower left corner. Senior centerback Sam Harder (Centennial, Colo.) played the ball to Boothe just outside the area, and was credited with the assist on the Boothe 85th-minute goal.
Rohloff finished off her brace with a golden goal in the 108th minute off an assist from Lydia Holtmann.
"The bright side is coming back from a deficit on two occasions," Hooker said. "We stuck with three in the back in extra time, and played a bit risky, but we just didn't close out the game well. With the amount of chances that we had, it's disappointing not to be able to close out that game."
Denver will leave the state of Colorado for the first time in a month and 10 days when the Pioneers travel to IUPUI (Friday/5 p.m. MT) and Western Illinois (Sunday/12 p.m. MT) next weekend.
