STOCKTON, CALIF. - The University of Denver men's golf team completed their fall tournament schedule with an impressive second place finish in the Pacific Invitational at the scenic Stockton Golf and Country Club. The Pioneers took a 1-shot lead into the final round but were surpassed by Washington State. The Cougars shot a final round 7-under par to win the tourney at 11-under. The Pioneers completed the day at even par and 5-under for the tournament. Washington State and Denver were the only schools in the 11-team field to break par.

"Just a great day and end to the fall season with a top three finish in every event this fall," said Denver head coach Erik Billinger. "Today Washington State got really hot and played well and we have to take our hats off to them."

The Pioneers had three golfers finish in the top 14, paced by sophomore Petter Mikalsen (Stavanger,Norway), who led the tournament after two rounds. Mikalsen ended up in second place at 7-under par, after a final round 2-under 69. Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara shot a final round 4-under par and pulled out the tournament win by 1-shot.

Promising freshman Chris Korte (Littleton, Colo.) completed his solid tournament in fourth place overall. Korte finished his three rounds at 4-under par after shooting a 1-under 70 on the final day.

"Petter and Chris played fantastic," Billinger stated.

Sophomore Patrick Frodigh (Westwood, Mass.) settled in and recorded a final round even par 71, lifting him into 14th place.

The fall season has Billinger and company optimistic about the spring campaign.

"Overall we're excited, not only about this tournament but our entire fall season, and we're really looking forward to next spring and working hard over the winter break."

The Pioneers next tournament will be the start of the spring season. They'll participate in the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on February 9th and 10th.
