DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball team (0-1) dropped a heartbreaker to Hawai'i (2-0), 60-58 on Sunday afternoon at Magness Arena. Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) attempted a three-point shot as time expired that would have given the Pioneers the win.

Three Pioneers scored in double figures led by junior guard Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) who tallied 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jordan Johnston dropped in 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and sophomore guard Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) added 10.

Senior guard Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) moved into a tie for 22nd place on Denver's All-Time Scoring list. Her four points in the game placed her tied with Dianne Mackley with 983 career points.

The Pioneers had momentum from the beginning of the second half after a quick steal and layup by sophomore forward Alecia Espinoza (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) after a Hawai'i inbounds. A clutch three-pointer by Johnston sparked a 7-0 run for the Pioneers. A layup by Bradley with 5:35 remaining gave the Pioneers their first lead of the afternoon.

The game was back and forth from that point on as both teams traded baskets.

With 1:38 left in the game Hawai'i senior guard Morgan Mason (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit her third three-point basket of the game that put the `Bows ahead for good. Mason led all scorers with 23 points.

Denver's improved shooting and tough defense gave them the momentum for a majority of the second half. The Pioneers poured in an impressive 40 points, while shooting at a 45 percent clip. One of the big keys to the second half was the Pioneers aggressive play that led to them consistently getting to the free-throw line. The Pioneers were 18-21 in the second half from the free-throw line and shot 78.3 percent for the game.

The Pioneers trailed early on as Hawai'i got out to a 7-3 lead at the first media timeout. Senior Jordan Johnston rained in the first bucket of the season for the Pioneers with a big three-point basket.

Hawai'i held the lead for the entirety of the first half, but DU battled hard and showed promise, particularly from their underclassmen. Freshman forward Jordan Alt (North Oaks, Minn.) in her first collegiate game proved to be a force on the boards as she finished with 10 rebounds, six coming in the first half. Espinoza put in nine points and collected 5 rebounds for the game.

The Pioneers head to Laramie, Wyo. on Friday Nov. 21 to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
