Denver Can't Slow Down Streaking Siena

DENVER -The University of Denver women's basketball team could not stop the streaking Siena Saints on Friday afternoon at Magness Arena. Denver (0-4) fell to Siena (3-0), 78-62, in the second game of the Denver Thanksgiving Classic.

Senior guard Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) had a season-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists to lead the Pioneers. Sophomore Jesse Spittel (Yorba Linda, Calif.) chipped in eight points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Tamara Lee (Edmond, Okla.) in just three minutes scored her first collegiate points and ended up with six points for the game.

Denver started the game with a lead after a Johnston three-point basket and a layup by sophomore forward Alecia Espinoza (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) 1:53 into the game. The Pioneers could not slow down the Saints from that point on as Siena held the lead for the remainder of the contest.



Sophomore guard Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) chipped in a new career-high 12 points on 5-12 shooting from the field and also dished out three assists. The Saints shot an impressive 46 percent from the field on 24-52 shooting. Siena also sank 19-25 from the charity stripe and put in 36 points in the paint. Freshman forward Margot Hetzke led all scorers with 23 points. She also collected six of the Saints 46 rebounds.

Senior guard Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) moved to within two points of 1,000 career points with her six points in the game.
She also reeled in seven rebounds in the game, including six in the first half.

Siena outshot the Pioneers in the first half 48 percent to 38 percent. Denver struggled from behind the arc hitting just four of 12 three-point attempts.

Denver will face the Belmont Bruins on Nov. 29 at noon during the second day of the Denver Thanksgiving Classic. Belmont lost to Akron in the earlier game, 73-58.
