DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball team dropped a tough one on Wednesday night at Magness Arena. Denver (0-6) succumbed to Cal State Fullerton (3-4) , 78-61.
Sophomore Alecia Espinoza (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) piled up a career-high 12 points. She also pulled in nine rebounds. Senior Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) netted 14 points, including three 3-pointers in 36 minutes, with 11 points coming in the first half.
Denver started the game hot going on a 10-3 run during the first four minutes of the game. Denver led 29-24 at halftime on 28 percent shooting from the field and eight of 11 from the free-throw line.
Fullerton took control in the second half with a 16-6 run that lasted for the first 6:44 of the half. The Titans were led by senior Chante Miles who had 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Senior Kathleen Iwouha had a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The Titans would eventually push the game to their largest lead of 19 points with 3:12 remaining after Iwouha drove for a layup. Fullerton shot 62 percent on 16-26 from the field in the second half and finished the game 11 of 22 from behind the arc.
Senior Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) had a solid outing for the Pioneers with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Freshman Ciera Morgan (Parker, Colo.) chipped in a career and season-high eight points.
The Pioneers scored 12 points off of 13 Fullerton turnovers and tied a season-high with 24 points in the paint. For the game the Pioneers shot 34 percent from the field to the Titans' 45 percent. Fullerton was 19-23 from the charity stripe on the night.
