Pioneers Rally for Summit League Title

KELLER, Texas –The University of Denver men’s golf team rallied eight-strokes back in the final round of the 2014 Summit League Golf Championship, and secured the conference title on Wednesday by five-shots behind three, third-place finishes by senior Ole Ramsnes, junior Victor Doka (Zurich, Switzerland) and freshman Pat Frodigh (Westwood, Mass.). Capturing the Summit League Championship title secures an automatic-bid into the NCAA Regional Championship for the Pioneers.

Down eight-strokes to IUPUI beginning the final round, Denver would eventually get within three just before the final turn. The Pioneers then went on a tear, carding 10-birdies en route to a combined two-over par on the back-nine solidifying a five-shot tournament title victory.

“I’m very proud of the way we battled back today to secure the victory,” said head coach Eric Hoos. “When the pressure was most, we came through the best. The guys showed a lot of heart and they never gave up.”

Denver secures its third conference title in the program history, and its’ second in four years and were led by a superb final round by Doka in which he attained a 13-straight par or better stretch before his lone bogey in the round, finishing at one-under par. Ramsnes and Frodigh boosted the comeback charge posting a combined six-of-10 birdies the Pioneers posted on the back-nine. All three student-athletes tied for third among the individual leaderboard for a tournament eight-over par.

Sophomore Arti Edelman (Geneva, Switzerland) led the Pioneers in scoring in the first round and turned in a scorecard that read 73-78-79 for a 230, while senior Oskar Arvidsson (Karna, Sweden) improved his second and third-round scores with a three-over par in the finale.

With the win, Denver earns an automatic berth in the 2014 NCAA Regional Championship for the first time since 2011.  The NCAA Division I Men’s College Golf Selection Show will be announced live via the Golf Channel Monday, May 5 at 8 a.m. MT during Morning Drive, which the Pioneers will find out location and competition for the next playoff platform.

The Crimson and Gold advance to the NCAA Regional May 15, with a chance to extend their season into late-May for the 2014 NCAA Championship Tournament.

LAST CONFERENCE TITLE:

When the Pioneer senior leaders were freshman in 2011, Arvidsson and Ramsnes held up their first conference championship trophy with the Sun Belt Conference hardware. Arvidsson finished in eighth individually with a one-under par, while Ramsnes was even-par and finished in 11th place. DU-Alum Klinton Krieger (Cheyenne, Wyoming) moved into a tie for 11th along with Ramsnes.
