Denver Men's Tennis Sweeps Second Conference Match

GALESBURG, ILL. - The University of Denver men’s tennis team defeated Western Illinois on Friday in Galesburg, Ill., in its second conference match of the season.

Denver improves to 7-9 overall and 2-0 in conference play following the win, while Western Illinois falls to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Pioneers got off to a good start by claiming the doubles point. Playing in the No. 1 spot, Eric Marbach (Naperville, Ill.) and Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada) beat Christoph Haertel and Max Cederkall 8-4. Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) and Alex Gasson (Alton, U.K.) also came away victorious, defeating Chris Bunch and Brett Furmanski 8-1 in the No. 2 spot.

Denver then went six for six in singles to win the match. In the No. 1 spot, Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) beat Haertel 6-2, 6-2. Next, Gasson was victorious over Mitch Granger 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot and Clinkenbeard posted a 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 win against Max Cederkall.

Netting the final three DU wins of the day were James, Aidan Talcott (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and Marbach. James bettered Brandon Meeker 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot, Talcott beat Bunch 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot and Marbach posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Brett Furmanski in the No. 6 spot.

Denver men’s tennis plays Drake on Sunday at 9 a.m., MT, in Des Moines, Iowa.
