DENVER – University of Denver men’s ice hockey head coach Jim Montgomery announced on Wednesday that four players signed National Letters of Intent to join the Pioneers when they begin their 2014-15 season.
The quartet of signees consists of defensemen Tariq Hammond (Calgary, Alberta) and Adam Plant (Penticton, British Columbia), forward Danton Heinen (Langley, British Columbia) and goaltender Tanner Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta).
“We are very excited to add Tariq, Adam, Danton and Tanner to the Denver Pioneer hockey family,” said Montgomery. “All of these young men have the ‘Team First’ attitude that we look for in our student-athletes, and they understand the importance of excelling in the classroom as well as on the ice.”
Hammond comes to the Pioneers after spending last season with the Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). While there, the 6-foot-2, 20-year-old Hammond was named as an AJHL South Division First Team All-Star and captained the Oilers as the fifth-leading scorer among defensemen in the AJHL. Hammond played in 60 games last season, scoring 11 goals and adding 28 assists.
Joining Hammond on defense will be Adam Plant, who spent last season with the West Kelowna Warriors of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). The 5-foot-10 defenseman in 54 games had 5 goals and 29 assists. He was also a member of Team Canada West in the U20 World Challenge.
Heinen will join the Crimson and Gold after putting up 62 points on 29 goals and 33 assists in 57 games with the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL. Heinen, who captained the Eagles, also earned BCHL Rookie of the Year honors for the 2013-14 season. The Langley, British Columbia forward was the 10th-leading scorer and top-scoring rookie in the league.
Rounding out the crop of recruits is Jaillet, a 5-foot-11 netminder who played for the AJHL’s Fort McMurray Oil Barons last season. Jaillet was named the AJHL’s Top Goaltender, as well as the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top Goaltender after allowing just 2.01 goals against and posting a .933 save percentage.
