DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team wrapped up its nonconference schedule with a 4-1 loss to [RV/-] BYU on Thursday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

"We've made a lot of glaring mistakes throughout the season, and most teams haven't made us pay," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "BYU really did a great job of making us pay for mistakes in the back. We have to go back to the drawing board a little bit and figure out who's going to play where. We have some players back that have been injured. More than anything else, we need to figure out how we're going to play, who's going to play at what spot. We'll get back to work on Monday, and get stuff sorted out in time for conference next week."

BYU got on the scoresheet in the fourth minute on an Elena Medeiros goal off an assist from Ashley Hatch. Hatch won the ball in a challenge down the right side, got to the end line and played her cross across the six yard box. The cross was deflected in front of sophomore goalkeeper Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.), and Medeiros ran onto it from just inside the 12, and knocked it into the open net to give the Cougars the early advantage.

Redshirt-sophomore Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.) quickly equalized, heading a 10-yard effort in the 12th minute off a cross from junior Taylor Ivins (West Haven, Utah) from the corner flag. Freshman Jocelyn Loomis (Sandy, Utah) found Ivins's run down the right side, leading to Ivins's picture-perfect cross from just inside the end line. Garzelloni beat BYU keeper Katherine Snyder to her left, bouncing her header on the goal line.

The Cougars struck a second time just before halftime as a cross from Madie Lyons found its way over the head of Rey and landed in the side netting.

Sophomore forward Michele Murphy got the second half started with a goal in the 53rd minute off Hatch's second assist of the match. Hatch bike kicked the ball over the Denver backline. Murphy initially won the ball, lost it, and won it back, knocking the ball past Rey to make it 3-1.

Hatch got a goal for herself in the 59th minute, her fifth of the season. Junior midfielder Marissa Nimmer was credited with the assist on the goal. Nimmer got Hatch behind the backline 1v1 with Rey. The sophomore keeper came out of the box to try to break up the pass, but didn't connect with the ball on her sliding effort. Hatch took a couple touches and slid it into the empty net.

Junior-transfer Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) made her return to the Pioneers' lineup in the 35th minute on Thursday night after missing the previous seven matches with an injury. Norman played 48 minutes in her return.

Freshman Riley Welch (Littleton, Colo.) made her Pioneer debut on Thursday night, coming on in the 84th minute.

Denver has the rest of the weekend off before opening conference play with its fourth match of a five-match homestand as the Pioneers take on Oral Roberts next Friday at 7 p.m. MT at CIBER Field. The match will be streamed live on Pioneer Vision.
