Jan. 23, 2015 Day One Results
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Denver's Sylvia Nordskar (Bærum, Norway) captured the women's 5K freestyle event at the University of Colorado Invitational in Steamboat Springs. Nordskar outdistanced second place finisher Petra Hyncicova of CU by 33.5 seconds.
"Sylvia had another good day, winning by an exceptional margin and is skiing in her own class right now," said DU Nordic head coach David Stewart. "33-seconds ahead of second is a margin rarely seen in a 5km."
It is the third consecutive Nordic race victory for Nordskar who handily won the 5K classic and 5K freestyle at the Utah Invitational two weeks ago. For her efforts in Utah, the sophomore was named the RMISA skier of the week.
Selma Ahlsand (Oslo, Norway) was the next best finisher for the Pioneers with a 12th place result.
For the men, DU's Moritz Madlener (Sulzberg, Bavaria, Germany) scored points for the Pioneers, taking third place in the men's 10K freestyle. Madlener was 31.4 seconds off the pace set by CU's Rune Oedegaard. CU's Mads Stroem finished in second place.
"Moritz continues to be consistent with his third, third place result in a row this year," Stewart remarked. "He's closing in on the guys from CU and is certainly motivated. The rest of the team was a mixed bag, but the group is training well and is looking ahead to tomorrow and progressing throughout the season."
DU's Dag Frode Trolleno (Oslo, Norway) finished in 20th place while Denver's Jorgen Brevik (Trondeim, Norway) ended up in 24th position.
After day one of the CU Invitational, the Pioneers find themselves in fourth place with 134 points. Colorado is the early leader with 183 points, followed by Utah (159) and Alaska-Anchorage (140).
Day two of the CU Invitational on Saturday will feature the men's 20K classical and the women's 15K classical. The alpine races commence on Sunday in Eldora, Colo.
