Stingy Denver Defense Holds Down Omaha, 60-53

DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball team dropped the University of Nebraska Omaha on Thursday night at Magness Arena. Denver (5-12, 2-1) defeated Omaha (5-10, 0-3), 60-53.

After being tied at halftime Denver went on a 12-2 run during the first five minutes of the second half giving the Pioneers a 10-point lead. Junior guard Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) tied season highs with 19 points and seven rebounds to lead Denver. The Pioneers rained in another seven 3-pointers. DU has netted 43 in the last four home games and 119 3-pointers on the season.

The Denver defense had their best game of the season forcing 16 turnovers and holding the Mavericks to a season low 53 points. Omaha shot 26 percent (9-of-34) from the field in the second half. Sophomore Alecia Espinoza (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) pulled in 10 of Denver's 35 rebounds.

The Pioneers battled hard in the first half and looked to their bench early as sophomore Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) sparked the offense with eight points in the first nine minutes of the game. Denver shot 34 percent (11-of-32) from the field and 42 percent (5-of-12) from beyond the 3-point line in the first half.

Senior Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made her 40th 3-pointer on the season at the 15 minute mark of the first half. She finished with 14 points and three assists. Van Riper-Rose passed Karla Kramer to move into 14th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,164 points.

The Pioneers forced the Mavericks into seven turnovers in the first half, which led to nine DU points off turnovers. However, Omaha would not go away as the Mavericks shot 44 percent (12-27) from the field in the first half and tie the game 31-31 at halftime.

Senior Taijhe Kelly pulled in 15 rebounds with eight coming in the first half and scored nine points. Junior Brianna Bogard poured in 15 points in the first half, but was limited in the second half by foul trouble and the Pioneers defense and finished with a team-high 19 points. Sophomore Mikaela Shaw was the third Maverick in double figures with 12 points. Shaw finished with eight rebounds and five assists as well.

For the game Denver shot 35 percent (20-of-58) from the field, 33 percent (7-of-21) from 3-point range and connected on 87 percent (13-of-15) from the free throw line.

The Pioneers will be back in action against Summit League adversary North Dakota State on Sunday January 11 at 1 p.m. MT in Magness Arena. Prior to the game on Sunday against NDSU the Pioneers will host their annual alumnae game at 9:15 a.m. at Magness Arena. There will also be an alumnae gathering at the Crimson and Gold (2017 South University Blvd.) from 5-7p.m. on Saturday January 10.
