Oct. 11, 2015 The University of Denver men's golf team is set to compete in its third tournament of the 2015-16 season, heading to the Lone Star State to take part in the 2015 Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas (Oct. 12-13). Fourteen teams will be taking part in this event, including hosts the University of Houston. A full list of the schools competing can be viewed HERE.
"There's a very good field at this event," says Denver head coach Erik Billinger. "We really wanted to challenge ourselves by taking on some high-quality opponents and competing in a southern tournament, which offers a different style of golf that we're looking forward to tackling."
While Billinger has never previously been to Golfcrest Country Club, he is well aware of the challenges the 7,272-yar/Par-72 course will present for his squad.
"Golfcrest is a big course and it's covered with Bermuda grass," says Billinger. "That's completely different than what we're used to here in Colorado so it'll be a good test for us to play at a course that uses it."
Bermuda grass is common in hotter climates, which is why it's most prevalent in the South in the U.S. A Golf Digest article discussing the differences between various grasses used on golf courses can be read HERE.
After finishing a disappointing 16th at their last event, the W. H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Billinger is looking forward to getting back into competitive action in Pearland.
"We've had a great couple of weeks in practice and the team is definitely energized," the DU grad says. "We're determined, focused, and looking to getting back on track with a good performance in Texas."
