FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Junior Brooke Boothe (Ontario, Calif.) netted a first-half header and classmate Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) kept her second clean sheet of the season to lead the University of Denver women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Fort Wayne on Friday night at Hefner Soccer Complex.
"The game didn't start off brightly when our captain Fran (Grazelloni) had to leave the match four minutes in (undisclosed)," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "I give Jackie (Dutton) a lot of credit though; she had to go from the mentality of not starting tonight to coming on and playing 86 minutes. She was fantastic for us. Overall, I thought we did a great job in the first half of pressing the tempo, and we got a great goal off a set-piece. We gave up a chance late in the first half, but I thought that our backs did a great job of closing the game out. We looked a very calm and experienced side on the ball in the second half, and saw the game out tonight."
The Pioneers got the breakthrough in the 21st minute on a Boothe back-post header. Senior Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) played the free-kick service from the left to the back post, in line with Boothe's run, allowing the 5-9 junior to head it home from inside five yards out. The goal is the first of the season for Boothe, and the seventh of the defensive midfielder's career. Friday night's assist was the 12th career helper for Norman.
"Stella played a fantastic ball, and Brooke put herself in a perfect position to head it in," Hooker said. "It was one of those set pieces where the two were just on the same page, 'I'm going to play this ball, and you're going to head it in.'"
Denver outshot IPFW 19-10 on the night, including doubling the Mastodons up in the opening 45 minutes (10-5). Rey recorded five saves in the Pioneers victory.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers return to CIBER Field for their final homestand next weekend. Denver will host Western Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m. MT, before hosting IUPUI on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT.
