DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team got a winner from junior Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) in the 67th minute to take down Western Illinois 2-1 on Friday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
The Pioneers got on the board in the 20th minute on a Lindsey Kuitse own goal. Freshman Cristiana Behnken (Ogden, Utah) started the attacking threat down the right side, picking out Fredette near the end line. Fredette played the ball across the six-yard box, a cross the deflected off of Kuitse and went into the roof of the net.
Denver had the better of the play during the opening 45 minutes, creating seven chances in the first frame. The Pioneers also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks in the first half.
Western Illinois grabbed the equalizer in the 58th minute as Skyler Jessop deflected a Brianna Hughes cross over the outstretched arms of junior Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.).
Fredette would grab the winner in the 67th minute as sophomore Makenzie Bothner (Park City, Utah) and senior Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) executed a set-piece play, freeing the sophomore down the left to play a back-post cross to Fredette, who completed her tap-in from four-yards out.
Denver finished the match with a 12-8 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Rey finished the match with two saves on the night.
With Friday night's win, Denver leap frogged three teams to move up to sixth in the Summit League standings with three matches to play for the Pioneers.
UP NEXT: Denver will host IUPUI on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. MT at CIBER Field. The Pioneers will honor their three seniors and redshirt-junior Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.) prior to their noon kickoff.
