DENVER - Junior Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) scored for the third time in the last five matches, including her second-straight game-winner to lead the University of Denver women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over IUPUI on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Following the match, Denver honored seniors Taylor Ivins (West Haven, Utah), Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) and Tina Vargas (Issaquah, Wash.) and redshirt-junior Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.) following the match in Denver's home finale.
The two squads, both in need of a win in the Summit League standings on Sunday, played to a scoreless first half, with Denver holding a 7-5 edge in shots in the opening frame. Norman had the best chance for the Pioneers in the 24th minute, rattling the crossbar from 25 yards out.
Denver found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute as Fredette beat screened goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt into the left side netting from 15 yards out. Norman started the scoring chance with a free kick from midfield. Fredette won the initial header, which fell to the feet of sophomore Riley Welch (Littleton, Colo.), who laid it off back to Fredette for the game-winner.
DU finished the match with a 12-9 edge in shots, and took seven of the match's eight corner kicks. Junior Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) made four saves for the Pioneers, two in each stanza.
With the win, the Pioneers moved to fifth in the standings, three points behind fourth-place South Dakota and four points behind third-place South Dakota State.
UP NEXT: Denver will finish the 2015 campaign on the road as the Pioneers travel to Omaha (Oct. 30) and Oral Roberts (Nov. 1).
