DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team fell to league-leaders North Dakota State 4-3 in extra time on Friday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
North Dakota State took the first half lead, causing the first half media timeout with Lauren Miller's 10th of the season. Miller got the ball on top of the 18 from Amy Yang, and slotted her shot into the bottom left corner.
Sophomore forward Riley Welch (Littleton, Colo.) knocked in the equalizer in the 29th minute, hitting home the rebound off a saved Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.) penalty kick. Friday night's goal is Welch's first of the campaign and of her career.
Redshirt-junior transfer Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) made it 2-1 Pioneers in the 36th minute, slotting home another rebound, this one off a 15-yard strike from senior Taylor Ivins (West Haven, Utah). The goal is Fredette's first as a Pioneer and the fourth of her career.
The Bison got the equalizer back in the 39th minute, as Yang and Miller synced up again for NDSU. Yang slid in Miller behind the back four down the left. Miller put her 11th of the year in the same spot as her 10th, finding the bottom left corner.
Friday's first half saw each team take seven shots, with Denver putting five of its seven on target.
Junior goalkeeper Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) made the most impactful play of the first 15 minutes of the second half, making a diving stop to her right to keep things level.
Things changed in the 80th minute as NDSU's Brittany Mueller knocked a 35-yard strike off the crossbar and in to put the Bison up 3-2, but Denver equalized just eight seconds later as a Mary DeWalt (West Bend, Wisc.) cross from the right was deflected into the Bison net by junior defender Tori Veth. The two teams went to extra time, the Pioneers fourth overtime match of the season.
Miller completed her hat trick in the 108th minute to send NDSU to nine points out of nine to start Summit League play in 2015, getting behind the Denver back four, and beating Rey to her left.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers will have a tight turnaround as they host 2014 Summit League champion South Dakota State Sunday at 12 p.m. MT at CIBER Field.
