MACOMB, Ill. - The University of Denver swept Western Illinois (25-18, 25-20, 25-14) Friday in Macomb, Ill. The Pioneers are 5-1 in the Summit League and 17-4 overall.
"Always happy to get a win on the road in conference play," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "We did a lot of things well especially on the block and defensive side of the ball holding WIU to a very low percentage. Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) had a great night offensively along with an error-free match from Becca Latham (Austin, Texas). We are back at it Sunday against a very good Omaha team."
Corrujedo led the Pioneers to a .348 hitting percentage in the match with 10 kills on 16 attempts, including seven kills in the third set of the match. Latham and Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) each recorded seven kills in the match. Latham also notched three blocks, and Baird added in two service aces in the first set. Denver held Western Illinois to a .019 hitting percentage.
After Western Illinois scored the first point of the match, Denver went on a seven-point run to begin the first set. Latham and Baird had three kills each in the first set. The Pioneers also recorded four aces in the set to win 25-18.
The Fighting Leathernecks came out strong to begin the second set. Denver fought back from a 5-2 deficit through six ties before claiming a 14-13 lead, which sparked a five-point run to solidify the DU lead. The Pioneers hit .429 in the set and tallied six total blocks, including solo blocks by Baird and Corrujedo.
The Pioneers led from start to finish of the third set, ultimately winning 25-14. In addition to Corrujedo's seven kills, Baird and Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) pitched in three kills each in the set. For the second set in a row, DU hit better than .400 in the set with a .441 hitting percentage. Defensive specialist Cassidy Rooke (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) also recorded six of the Pioneers' 19 digs in the set.
Denver returns home Sunday to host Omaha (9-8, 4-0 Summit League) at 2 p.m. MT.
