DENVER
- Despite a late rally, the University of Denver women's basketball team came up short on Sunday, losing 61-49 to Weber State at Magness Arena.

Senior Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) led the way for DU, pouring in a season-high 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting. The Texas native also added three rebounds and three assists in the loss.

Haley Simental (Pueblo West, Colo.) continued her solid start to her collegiate career, dropping in a season-high 11 points to go along two assists and no turnovers.

"I think we made an adjustment going to a four-guard lineup to start the fourth quarter," said head coach Kerry Cremeans when asked about the Pioneers' 10-0 run to start the fourth. "I think it helped give us some good scoring. We weren't finding the bottom of net, and with the four-guard lineup, we were able to spread them out a little bit. We were able to get a couple of buckets and some stops and get right back into the ballgame."

Denver was able to using the long-range shot in the second half to fight its way back, going 5-for-10 from deep.

"I think Friday night, we had a little bit of the jitters," said Cremeans about her team's outside shooting. "There is no question that is going to be key for us. We have to have a strong presence from the outside. We also plan on getting some points from the inside as well. Everyone on this team has to be a contributor."

Both teams battled each other tough in the opening 10 minutes, with neither team getting a clear advantage early. The Wildcats built their lead to five points at the end of the quarter after stealing the Pioneers' inbound pass and going the whole length of the court to score at the buzzer to make it 11-6. Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) and Samantha Romanowski (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) led the way with four points each in the first quarter.

DU worked its way back into the game with a 12-5 run midway through the second quarter that was capped off by a jumper from Tori Bryant (Brea, Calif.) to tie the game up at 20-20 with less than three minutes to go in the half.

WSU, though, was able to get some separation in the final two minutes, using a 10-0 run of its own to take a 30-20 lead into break.

Weber State's Kailie Quinn led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 13 points, which included a 3-for-5 performance from behind the arc. Quinn also pulled down five rebounds in the first half.

Rebounding played a big role in first half, with the Wildcats holding a 21-15 advantage through two quarters of play.

A basket by Quinn snapped a three-minute scoreless streak by both teams to start the second half and extend the WSU lead to 12. It was the 15th point of the afternoon for the sophomore from Salt Lake City.

A 3 by Poss capped off a 7-3 run for Denver in the closing moments of the third quarter, making it an 11-point contest at 43-32 for Weber State.

The Pioneers came up swinging to open the fourth, using a big 10-0 run to make it a four-point game at 46-42 in favor of the Wildcats after a free throw from Jesse Spittel (Yorba Linda, Calif.), giving the junior five points in the game.

The Wildcats responded with a 15-6 run of their own to push their lead back double digits at 61-48 with 1:26 remaining.

The Pioneers wouldn't get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way, losing 61-49.
