Tulsa, Okla. - Despite 15 points from point guard Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) the University of Denver was unable to defeat Oral Roberts University in the Mabee Center on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt senior Vicky McIntyre turned in an outstanding performance for the Golden Eagles, posting 26 points and 17 rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Denver (7-17, 4-6 Summit) fell to Oral Roberts (12-12, 6-5 Summit) 65-44.
The first half was a back and forth affair with the lead changing hands six times. Senior Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) gave the Pioneers a 15-14 lead on a layup with 8:25 remaining in the first half. Then the Golden Eagles used a 7-0 run during the next 2:35 of the game to regain the lead 21-15. Sophomore Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) drilled a 3-pointer at the 4:02 mark of the first half to close ORU's lead to 21-20. The Golden Eagles, on the broad shoulders of their 6'7" center McIntyre, closed out the half on an 8-0 run, including six points from McIntyre and carried a 29-20 lead into halftime.
After a 3-pointer by Bradley cut the Golden Eagles advantage to 31-25 with 17:28 to go in the second half, Oral Roberts went on a 10-2 run. Senior Atoe' Jackson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers during ORU's run that stretched their lead to 41-27. The game never got closer than a 12 point margin after that as Oral Roberts went on to victory 65-44.
For the Pioneers, Bradley was the lone player in double figures with 15 points, to go along with three rebounds. Sophomore Alecia Espinoza (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) chipped in eight points and collected a team-high seven rebounds. Poss put in eight points off the bench for the Crimson and Gold.
Team captain and senior Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) drained a jumper at the 5:21 mark of the first half that moved her into 12th place on the Pioneers all-time scoring list, passing Kristi Burns (1,232 points). Van Riper-Rose finished the game with six points and now has 1,236 career points.
For the Golden Ealges, McIntyre lead the way with 26 points and 17 rebounds. Atoe' Jackson recorded 22 points and grabbed five boards. Freshman Jordan Gilbert finished with nine points and five rebounds.
The Pioneers struggled shooting the ball all afternoon. For the game, Denver shot 26 percent (14-of-55) from the field and 29 percent (5-of-17) from the 3-point line, while Oral Roberts connected on 47 percent (25-of-53) of its attempts from the field and 20 percent (2-of-10) from behind the 3-point arc. The Pioneers sank 79 percent (11-of-14) of their free throw attempts. The Golden Eagles dropped in 87 percent (13-of-15) of their attempts from the foul line.
Denver returns home for a three-game homestand that will finish up the home portion of their 2014-15 schedule. Denver welcomes South Dakota State University to Magness Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. MT. On Saturday, Feb. 14 Denver plays host to IPFW on Senior Day at Magness Arena at 1 p.m. MT. The DU athletic community will honor seniors Jordan Johnston, Morgan Van Riper-Rose and Theresa Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) in a pregame ceremony before taking on IPFW.
