IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 66 University of Denver women's tennis team (7-6) took down No. 59 UC Irvine (9-6) Sunday morning, 4-3.
The Pioneers and Anteaters fought tooth and nail from the beginning. UC Irvine took the early lead with the doubles victory.
"The girls were on a mission once we stepped out on the court for singles," said Head Coach Christian Thompson. "Julia and Morgan did a great job today playing smart tennis and winning 2 quick points for us changing the momentum of the match."
Denver would not let the match slip away that easily. Sophomore Morgan Barnhill would get the Pioneers on the board with a quick, 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Andrea Duva. Freshman Julia O'Loughlin would follow that up with her 10th consecutive singles victory, 6-2, 6-4 at court two. After a pair of `Eater victories sophomore Sonja Radosevic would hand Kat Facey her first loss of the season in 14 matches. Sophomore Maureen Slattery would take finish UC Irvine off with a, 6-3, 6-4 win over Sarah Gong on court one.
"It came down to Maureen and Sonja when we were down in the overall score 3-2," said Thompson. "They did an amazing job feeding off each other with energy and played to win to close both matches out in straight sets. We are looking forward to Friday's match against Fresno State at home."
Denver will return home to face Fresno State on Friday, March 27, with the match beginning at noon.
