March 25, 2015 DENVER - Legendary basketball coach Al McGuire used to say, "The best thing about a freshman is he becomes a sophomore."
That can only mean bigger and better things for the University of Denver's exciting freshman Chris Korte (Littleton, Colo.) who has earned his first Summit League Men's Golfer of the Week award.
Korte has made a huge and immediate contribution to the DU men's golf team and his future appears to be brighter than a sunny Arizona afternoon. And it was in Arizona last week, at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, that Korte excelled. He finished in a sixth place tie in the field of 85, at 9-under par, tops on the Pioneers. The Regis Jesuit product helped the team to a fifth place finish in the strong field of 15.
Korte held the lead for much of the final round as he finished each day below par, shooting 69-67-71 for a total of 207 at the Palm Valley Golf Club. In the second round, Korte had two bogeys which he followed each time with eagles, showing fortitude not often seen in a freshman.
"We are so proud of Chris for being named the Summit League Golfer of the Week," said Denver head coach Erik Billinger. "Chris exemplifies what Pioneer golf is all about. A true passion for the game and lots of hard work. Congrats to Chris."
Korte and the rest of the Pioneers begin `The Goodwin' tournament, hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, California on Thursday, March 26th at the historic Stanford University Golf Course which has been around since 1930.
"It's the best field of the year so far," said Billinger. "And a first class, tough golf course."
Billinger, no doubt, is glad to have Chris Korte on his side to attack the course for the Pioneers.
