SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Petter Mikalsen (Stavanger, Norway) saved his best round for last at the NCAA San Diego Regional. However, it wasn't enough as the University of Denver sophomore will not advance to the NCAA Championships later this month.
Mikalsen fired a final round 1-under par 71, good enough to place him in a tie for 29th place overall and in a tie for third overall amongst individuals. Mikalsen had three birdies on the front nine and four birdies in his first 12 holes before running into a double bogey on 14 and a bogey on 15 that quelled his hot start. He finished the tournament at The Farms Golf Course at 6-over par.
"Great final round for Petter," said Erik Billinger who wrapped up his first season as Denver's head coach. "He had it four under at one point and it could have been six or seven easily if a couple of more putts dropped."
Jon Rahm of Arizona State won the tournament at 10-under par, two shots better than Max McGreevey of Oklahoma and fellow sooner Michael Gellerman.
Oklahoma won the regional at 21-under par, 20-shots better than Arizona State. Joining those two teams in the NCAA Tournament in Bradenton, Florida beginning May 26th will be Georgia Tech, Georgia and Virginia.
The regional was a great learning experience for Mikalsen and with the entire DU squad coming back next season the future is bright for the Pioneers.
"I'm really proud of how Petter competed this week as he played hard and with a lot of heart," Billinger stated. "What an awesome season for Petter and I couldn't be more proud of him."
