DENVER -- The University of Denver women's soccer team got a goal from junior center back Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.), but it wasn't enough as Portland topped Denver 2-1 in extra time on Saturday evening at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Junior defensive mid Brooke Boothe (Ontario, Calif.) nearly put the Pioneers ahead in the fourth minute as a Norman corner kick was headed by Boothe, who beat the keeper, but her shot was cleared off the line by a Portland defender.

Norman did get the Pioneers on the score sheet in the 42nd minute, putting her free kick from just inside the midfield stripe on target, leaving the Portland goalkeeper indecisive with the runs of Boothe and redshirt-junior Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.) flashing across the face of goal. Saturday's breakthrough was the Pioneers first goal of the season, and the eighth of Norman's career.

Denver went into the lockers with the goal advantage, holding a 5-2 advantage in shots (three on goal), and the two sides took three corner kicks apiece.

Portland leveled proceedings in the 49th minute when Maddie Dieker put Cecilia Pedersen through on goal behind the Pioneers back four. Pedersen beat goalkeeper Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) on the 1v1, sliding her shot on the ground into the bottom right corner.

Rey made a diving save to keep the match level in the 58th minute, preventing Pedersen from giving the Pilots the advantage. The two teams would head to an extra session, the Pioneers third match to go to extra time this season.

After a relatively quiet start to the first overtime, Portland's Dieker grabbed the winner for the Pilots in the 100th minute off a ground cross from Devlyn Jeter that freed Dieker up just behind the penalty spot.

UP NEXT: The Pioneers will open Summit League play on Oct. 4 when they travel to South Dakota. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. MT.
