Nashville, Tenn. - In a big upset to cap off the first weekend of the season, the University of Denver women's tennis team defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 4-2 today in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, hosted by Vanderbilt University.
On the heels of a well-fought defeat to the defending national champion Vanderbilt Commodores yesterday, co-captain junior Maureen Slattery (Newport, Va.) led the Pioneers to a heroic victory against the #49-ranked Penn State squad, clinching today's match in a stunning three-set fashion.
Sophomore Julia O'Loughlin (Highland Beach, Fla.) and freshman Bianca Mok (Boise, Idaho) also shined today, winning both their singles and double matches to pick up crucial points for the team.
"It's an amazing feeling to be able to capitalize on such a great opportunity this weekend," head coach Christian Thompson said. "Beating both Memphis and nationally-ranked Penn State, while battling with Vanderbilt is a great way to start our season. We couldn't be more proud of our girls and their tremendous effort this weekend!"
