Pioneers Ninth After Round One of Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational

DENVER ââ'¬" The University of Denver men's golf team finished its opening round ninth on Thursday at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. The Pioneers shot a 289 on the day at the Stockton Golf and Country Club.
Par for the 6,516-yard course was 71.
Sacramento State leads the 13-team field after day one with a team score of 278.
"Tough start to the round but the boys stayed focused through the morning to keep us in the mix," assistant coach Patrick Kent said. "We are proud of their fight and excited to get back on the course tomorrow."
For DU, Isaac Petersilie tied his career low with a 68 on Thursday, putting the freshman in a tie for third. Petersilie had four birdies and an eagle on the 16th hole to round out his first day of play.
"Isaac played solid golf from start to finish," Kent said. "He is an elite-caliber player and can putt the ball with the best of them. Don't be surprised if you see him near the top come Saturday."
Chris Korte sits tied for 18th through 18 holes with an even-par 71. The junior dialed it up on the back nine, shooting 3-under during the nine-hole stretch.
Petter Mikalsen and teammate Jake Kelley each tied for 48th with a 4-over 75 on the afternoon.
Eric Hagen wrapped up day one with an 82.
Michael Boylan and Roy Kang, both competing as individuals, finished out their first round later in the afternoon. Kang sits tied for 10th with a 1-under 70 and Boylan tied for 71st.
Play continues with round two on Friday.
