DENVER - The [1/2] University of Denver men's lacrosse team defeated Dartmouth 16-6 on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Sunday's sellout of 2,631 is the eighth-straight at Peter Barton and seventh-largest crowd in stadium history.
Junior captain Tyler Pace (Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Pioneers with an even three goals and three assists for a career-high six points and was named the Faceoff Classic MVP.
The Pioneers led from whistle to whistle, earning their second-straight win by a margin of at least 10 goals and third-straight game with at least 10 different goal-scorers.
Pace kicked off the scoring for Denver 1:34 into the game to give Denver its permanent lead. Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished off an assist by Nate Marano (Tustin, Calif.) in a freshman-to-freshman connection for the Pioneers' second goal of the game. Junior Zach Miller (Steamburg, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals 52 seconds apart to increase DU's lead to 4-0. Miller first tallied an unassisted goal after 2015 NCAA faceoff statistical leader Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) picked up a groundball to save the DU possession, then Miller converted on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Pace with 9:00 remaining in the first quarter.
The Pioneers closed out the first quarter with three goals in the final 2:59. Senior Bryce Parietti (Centennial, Colo.) scored off an assist from Max Planning (Alexandria, Va.), then Pace notched his second goal of the game just 41 seconds later. Senior Colin Woolford (Norwalk, Conn.) scored the final goal of the first quarter off an assist from sophomore Brendan Bomberry (Ohsweken, Ontario) with nine seconds left in the first quarter to give Denver a 7-0 lead at the end of one.
Denver's defense also dominated in the first quarter. The Pioneers caused three Dartmouth turnovers and only allowed one shot in the first 15:00. Baptiste won 7-of-8 faceoffs in the first quarter and picked up four groundballs.
Both teams made second-quarter goalie changes with senior Joey Gigantiello (Shamong, N.J.) relieving freshman goalie Alex Ready (Lancaster, Pa.) 3:07 into the second quarter. Each goalie finished the first half with two saves, and Ready did not allow a goal. Joe Balaban replaced Blair Friedensohn for Dartmouth at the start of the second quarter and made four saves, limiting the Pioneers to a single goal in the quarter.
Dartmouth's Jack Korzelius scored two goals in the second quarter for the Big Green to cut Denver's lead to 7-2, prompting a timeout from Denver with 4:07 to play in the first half. The Pioneers ended their 12:39 scoring drought with a goal by sophomore Connor Donahue (Groton, Mass.)off an assist by 2016 Tewaaraton Watch List selection Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.), giving Denver an 8-2 lead at the half.
The Pioneers outscored the Big Green 6-2 in the third quarter. Once again, Dartmouth's two goals came from the same player with Wiley Osborne finding the back of the net off assists from Jack McCormick and Korzelius.
Denver's first two goals of the third quarter came on power play opportunities. Bomberry tallied his first of the game off an assist from Cannizzaro before Cannizzaro dished out his third assist of the game for Pace's eighth career hat trick. Cannizzaro also drew the 6-on-4 opportunity for the Pioneers as he cleared the ball after Denver killed an extra-man opportunity for Dartmouth.
DU closed out the quarter with four unanswered goals, including three in the final 1:45. Two attackmen got their first goals of the game in the run, with senior Jack Bobzien (Littleton, Colo.) finishing a Pace assist from the back door to put the Pioneers up 11-4 and Cannizzaro coming around from behind the net for an unassisted goal. Pace dished the ball for Bomberry's second man-up goal with 44 seconds remaining in the quarter before Cannizzaro exploded for a backhanded goal with 0.1 on the clock. The Pioneers carried a 14-4 lead into the final frame.
The teams split the scoring in the fourth quarter, recording two goals apiece. Korzelius completed his hat trick on a power-play opportunity to begin the final quarter against goalie Hunter Krout (Naples, Fla.) before Denver notched its final two goals. Planning scored off an assist from sophomore Joe Reid (Petaluma, Calif.) to return Denver to a 10-goal difference, and Marano became the 11th Pioneer with a goal with 3:27 remaining in the game. David Marshall cleared the ball and put the ball past freshman goalie David Winsor (Boulder, Colo.) to close out the game with the final score of 16-6.
The Denver goalies combined for 11 saves in the game, with Gigantiello making five saves in 21:53. Krout and Winsor recorded two saves apiece and also each allowed one goal.
The Pioneers outshot the Big Green 38-24 in the game and picked up 40 groundballs to Dartmouth's 22. Denver completed the day with 17 faceoff wins, with Baptiste winning 14-of-20 and freshman Ryan Harnisch (Huntington Beach, Calif.) winning 3-of-5 faceoffs. DU caused seven turnovers in the game, including three by Cannizzaro.
UP NEXT: Denver will play five of its next six games away from home, opening that stretch with a trip to North Carolina for the second-consecutive season. POSTGAME NOTES:
- The Pioneers improved their winning-streak to 17 games on Sunday, winning their final 13 of the 2015 season en route to the program's first National Championship (last loss 3/14/15 at Ohio State).
- At least 10 different players scored for Denver for the sixth time since the start of the 2015 season, and the 12th time since offensive coordinator Matt Brown joined the coaching staff full time in 2008. Denver had at least 11 different players score for the fourth time since 2008.
- The Pioneers are 76-14 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, since it was built in 2005, including 45-5 under seventh-year head coach Bill Tierney.
- Denver now has an 18-game home winning streak, the longest active in the country and tied for 16th in NCAA history.
- Saturday's sellout is the 26th in the stadium's history, and the 13th since the start of the 2014 season. Denver is 21-4 in sellouts at Peter Barton (not including exhibition vs. Johns Hopkins on Jan. 30).
- Denver is now 43-9 as a top-5 team since turning Division I, including 7-2 as the No. 1 team in the USILA Coaches' Poll.
- Head coach Bill Tierney (seventh season) is now 87-25 at DU and 359-118 in his career (32nd season).
- Zach Miller extended his consecutive-game point streak to 41 games (entered this weekend 2nd in the nation). Miller has 126 points (68G-59A) during that stretch. Miller has had a point in every collegiate game he has played in (missed one game in 2014).
- Connor Cannizzaro extended his consecutive-game point streak to 29 games (entered the weekend 8th in the nation). Cannizzaro has 121 points (79G-42A) in that stretch.
- Cannizzaro also extended his consecutive-game goal streak to 29 games (entered the weekend tied for 2nd). Cannizzaro has 79 goals in that stretch.
- Sophomore Trevor Baptiste has double-digit faceoff wins in all 23 games of his collegiate career.
- Denver has reached 10 goals in 25 consecutive games.
- In the first quarter, the Pioneers allowed zero shots on goal in a quarter for the first time since 4/3/15 against Villanova, in which the Wildcats were held without a shot on goal in the second quarter.
