DENVER - The 52nd-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team defeated No. 67 Wichita State University 4-3 today in the first home match of the 2016 season. The Pioneers went 3-3 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles.
"It was a great team effort," head coach Ricardo Rubio said. "It started in the doubles-Diogo and Zach came through. Zach has been doing a nice job for us. We didn't have our full lineup today but I told the guys at the beginning of the season that all nine guys have to be ready to play because we just don't know what's going to happen with injuries or illnesses and it showed today. Zach came down to his match and he played with poise and he played with energy and at the end we came through. Wichita State is a good team, so now we have to get ready to play BYU tomorrow."
DU received singles victories from David Fox (Surrey, United Kingdom), Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) and Zach Fryer (Centennial, Colo.).
In doubles play, the Pioneers found success from Fox/Jesse Ruder-Hook (Denver, Colo.) and Rocha/Fryer. Denver will host BYU tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. MT at Lifetime Fitness.
