Denver Falls 13-6 at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team lost 13-6 at UC Davis Sunday. The Pioneers are 4-7 on the season and hold a 1-3 record in the MPSF.

Redshirt sophomore Nicole Martindale (Brooklin, Ontario) and freshman Elizabeth Behrins (Basking Ridge, N.J.) each recorded three points in the game. Martindale scored a hat trick and won four draw controls in her second game of 2016, while Behrins tallied two goals and dished out an assist.

The Aggies jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 16:48 as UC Davis dominated possession and disrupted the Denver clear.

The Pioneers finally got on the board as Martindale scored her first goal of the season on a free position attempt with 7:02 remaining in the first half. Behrins made the score 6-2 at the half with a goal with 0:28 on the clock.

Denver continued its run in the second half as Martindale kicked off the scoring 7:12 into the half, cutting UC Davis's lead to 6-3. The Aggies scored two in a row to restore their lead to five, 8-3, with 14:38 remaining in the game.

DU responded with consecutive goals as Behrins and Martindale scored 1:22 apart. Martindale's third goal of the game was assisted by Behrins and put the Pioneers within three, 8-5.

UC Davis stopped the Denver momentum as two Aggies completed hat tricks. Ellie Delich scored her third with 7:06 remaining, before freshman Taylor Cuenin notched goals 0:15 apart to increase UC Davis's lead to 11-5 with 5:21 to play.

Denver tacked on one more goal as Sarah Kasun (Bel Air, Md.) finished an assist from Christa Reese (Lutherville, Md.) in a captain-to-captain connection, before UC Davis closed out the game with two more goals for the final score of 13-6.

Goalie Maddy Stevenson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) made six saves in the loss and picked up a career-high-tying four groundballs for the second straight game. Layne Voorhees (Alexandria, Va.) also had four groundballs and caused four turnovers in the game.

The Pioneers will return to Denver for a four-game MPSF homestand. DU will begin by hosting San Diego State Friday, April 8 at 4 p.m. MT before hosting [7/7] USC Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m. MT.
