July 14, 2016

DENVER -- The University of Denver is saddened to announce that former men's gymnastics coach Doug DeWitt passed away on Thursday, July 7. The funeral will be held Monday, July 18, at 11 a.m. MT at Cherry Hills Community Church in Highlands Ranch.

"On behalf of the University of Denver gymnastics community, we are saddened by the news of former men's gymnastics coach Doug DeWitt's passing," Denver gymnastics coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We sincerely appreciate the impact Doug had on our sport, this university and our student-athletes. Denver gymnastics is proud of the commitment and passion that he provided during his years of service to the sport at the University of Denver. Our thoughts and prayers are with Georgia DeWitt through this difficult time."

DeWitt coached the Pioneers from 1958-70, taking over eight years after the team was recognized as a varsity sport at DU. During his tenure as coach, DeWitt led the Pioneers to three top-10 finishes in the NCAA team standings: No. 7 in 1964 and 1969, and No. 9 in 1962. He also coached Denver's first All-American in men's gymnastics: John Quintana.

Before becoming DU's coach, DeWitt was a student-athlete for the Pioneers, competing on the men's gymnastics team from 1950-53.
