PIONEERS MOURN THE PASSING OF GREG WOODS

Aug. 19, 2016

The Denver Hockey Family was saddened to learn of the recent passing of alumnus Greg Woods earlier this week at the age of 61. A defenseman from Babbitt, Minnesota, Woods was a member of the 1977-78 Pioneers team that captured 33 victories, the second-highest total in program history. He earned Second Team All-WCHA honors for 1976-77 and 1977-1978 as a sophomore and junior and served as the Pioneers' alternate captain during his senior season of 1978-79.

In total, Woods recorded 176 points (51G-125A) at Denver to rank first among defensemen in career scoring and ninth overall. He twice recorded 52 points in a season which is the third-highest single-season total by a Pioneers rearguard behind only Matt Carle (53, 2005-06) and Craig Redmond (54, 1982-83).

Prior to his tenure at DU, Woods played junior hockey with the Fargo-Moorhead Sugar Kings and St. Cloud Junior Blues, both of the MidJHL. Upon graduating from DU (BSBA), he ran his own appraisal business in Metro Denver for several years. Woods was among the final cuts for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team as Irv Moss wrote in this 2011 Denver Post article: http://www.denverpost.com/2011/01/10/colorado-classics-greg-woods-former-du-hockey-star/
