Sept. 23, 2016 LAS VEGAS - Former University of Denver men's basketball player Phil Heath continued his reign over the men's bodybuilding world, winning his sixth straight title this past weekend. Heath's victory moved him into a tie for fourth all-time in overall titles with Dorian Yates.
Heath took first in the IFBB Pro Men Division of the bodybuilding portion of the four-day event, beating out fellow United States native Shawn Roden. With the win, the former DU standout took home the $400,000 purse awarded to the champion, upping his career earnings from the contest to just over 1.5 million, the most by any contestant in the history of the event.
With just one more win, Heath will move into a tie with former bodybuilding great Arnold Schwarzenegger, who won six straight from 1970-1975 and one more in 1980. Ronnie Coleman and Lee Haney hold the record for most Mr. Olympia wins with eight each.
The Seattle native played four years for Denver from 1998-02, helping guide the Pioneers' transition from Division II to Division I. Heath also double-majored in information technology and business administration during his four years at DU.
While playing guard for Denver, Heath appeared in 65 games, scoring a career-best seven points against Colorado Christian on Dec. 28, 2000, also pulling down a career-high four rebounds in the same game. He also dished out a career-most three assists twice during his playing career.
After his playing days came to an end, Heath then entered bodybuilding in 2002. By 2005, He won the overall National Physique Committee (NPC) USA Championships, giving him the right to compete as an IFBB Pro. Heath then went on to win his first two IFBB professional events that year: The Colorado Pro Championships and The New York Pro Championship.
