Pioneers Place Ninth at Tucker Invitational

DENVER - The University of Denver men's golf team finished ninth after shooting a final-round team score of 305 on Saturday at the Tucker Invitational. The Pioneers' eighth-place finish is their best of the new season.
DU ended its tournament with a team score of 895 (298-292-305).
Par for the 7,555-yard course was 72.
San Diego State locked up the team title, ending with a final team score of 863, 1-under-par. The Aztecs were the only team to finish the tournament under par in a talented and deep field of competitors.
Colorado State's Blake Cannon took home individual medalist honors with a 6-under-par 210, two strokes ahead of the runner up.
The Pioneers went with the five-man lineup of Chris Korte, Jake Kelley, Petter Mikalsen, Isaac Petersilie and Eric Hagen.
"I saw our true potential this week, especially seeing the guys be the low round in the second among a lot of really good teams," head coach Erik Billinger said. "My goal as a coach is to help them win each day and fall in love with getting better each and every day. If we do that, we will have a lot of fun."
Kelly led was DU's top performer, finishing tied for 22th after putting up a 4-over-par 76 on Saturday, bringing his total to 222 (73-73-76).
"My game feels close," Kelly said. "This week was a step in the right direction for both my game and the team. We have solid group of guys and will keep progressing in a positive direction. The scores are going to follow."
Korte ended his tournament tied for 28th after 3-over 75 in his final 18 holes, giving him a 223 (77-71-75) score.
Hagen capped off his final day of play with a 4-over 76, putting him in a tie for 31st.
Mikalsen posted a 78 in final-round action, giving him a total of 229 (80-71-78).
Petersilie ended tied for 72nd with a three-round score of 233.
Denver returns to action as it plays host for the Paintbrush Invitational at the Colorado Golf Club on Oct. 10.
