DENVER - The University of Denver men's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot second half by IUPUI on Sunday, losing 83-72 in Summit League play. The Pioneers dropped to 16-11(8-6 SL) on the season, while the Jaguars improved to 12-16 (6-8 SL).
The Pioneers' 11-point defeat was their worst at home this year.
Daniel Amigo continued his dominant ways, scoring a game-high 24 points to go with seven rebounds. It was fourth time in the last five games the El Paso, Texas native has finished with at least 20.
Jake Pemberton was the other DU player to finish with double figures in points, netting 16 in 38 minutes of action. Pemberton also had five assists, his 13th game this season with at least that amount.
IUPUI was led by Darrel Combs' 18 points, one of five Jaguars to score in double figures.
Denver came out swinging, going up 14-4 to start the contest. Amigo led the charge early, scoring or assisting on 12 of the first 14 points.
IUPUI fought its way back into midway through the opening half, making it a two-possession game after a jumper from Aaron Brennan.
The Jaguars closed to within one after a deep 3 from Matt O'Leary late in the frame made it 29-28 in favor of Pioneers. It was his second made 3-pointer of the period.
DU never relinquished the lead though, going into the break ahead 35-31.
Defense was the name of the game for Denver in the first 20 minutes, holding IUPUI to some tough shots early and came up with stops late when it mattered most.
Good shooting helped keep the Pioneers in front in the first half as they went 15-for-27 from the field (55.6 percent).
A jumper from T.J. Henderson gave the Jaguars their first lead of the night at 40-38 in the opening minutes of the second, part of a 13-3 run to start the half.
IUPUI pushed its lead to 11 after a basket from Kellon Thomas midway through the half, upping his total to nine on the afternoon.
A couple of baskets from Pemberton made it an eight-point game, keeping DU in the contest.
The Jaguars took control from there, never letting Denver get any closer than that the rest of the way, picking up the win and getting the split in the season series.
