BANDON, Ore. - The University of Denver men's golf finished eighth after first-round play of the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday. The Pioneers posted a team score of a 1-over-par 289 for the round at the Old MacDonald Course.
Par for the 6,893-yard course is 72.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Petter Mikalsen, Chris Korte, Jake Kelley, Isaac Petersilie and Troy Dangler.
No. 8 Oregon leads the field through 18 holes of team play, posting a 13-under 275 on Sunday, eight shots ahead of the nearest competition.
Texas Tech's Hannes Ronnebald holds a one-shot advantage in the clubhouse after round one. The Red Raider fired a 7-under 65 in his opening round.
Mikalsen had it going on Sunday, finishing third with a 5-under 67 in his first round of play. The senior's big day was highlighted by five straight birdies in row during his stellar performance.
"Petter played a great round today," Billinger said. "At one point he made five birdies in a row and looked confident all day. I also saw some great things out of all five players today and we are close to a great team round. We are looking forward to the next two days as it looks like some weather might be coming in and that will provide us with an opportunity to jump some teams during tough conditions on the course."
Kelley closed out his first day of the tournament in a tie for 37th after shooting a 1-over 73 for the round.
Petersilie wrapped up his first 18 holes of the three-day event tied for 47th with a 2-over 74 on Sunday.
Dangler fired a 3-over 75 to put him in a tie for 55th after round one.
Korte sits in a tie for 64th through Sunday at 4-over par.
