DENVER – The Denver Pioneers (3-0-0, 0-0-0-0) scored three goals in 2:16 late in the first period to help beat the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks (0-5-0, 0-0-0-0) on Friday night in Magness Arena.
Cole Guttman,
Emilio Pettersen and
Liam Finlay each had two-point games as Denver improved to 3-0-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season. The Pioneers outshot the Nanooks 43-16 and dominated in the faceoff circle where they went 46-27.
"It took us a little time to get our feet wet and get our feet moving," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "Once we started to simplify our game with the puck and started to move our feet we were able to take the first period over"
The Nanooks struck first on the power play at 8:21 of the first period when Chris Jandric fired a shot from the left circle and Max Newton batted the rebound to Colton Leiter who took advantage of a sliding
Devin Cooley.
Denver's response came at 16:34 of the first when the top line of
Jarid Lukosevicius, Guttman and Pettersen continued its dominance through the early part of the season. With the Pioneers on the power play, Guttman slid down the right wall, sent a cross-ice pass to Lukosevicus and the senior forward fed Pettersen for his second goal of the season. Shortly after,
Michael Davies redirected Guttman's backhander to give Denver a 2-1 lead.
Ian Mitchell and
Liam Finlay connected on a rink-wide pass only 29 seconds later to cap the Pioneers' three-goal burst and give Finlay his first goal of the night.
Alaska-Fairbanks had a chance to close the two-goal gap on a penalty shot with 7:10 remaining in the third period, but Cooley shut the door with the right pad to preserve the Pioneers' lead. Cooley finished with 25 saves on 26 shots
Finlay's empty net goal made it a 4-1 final and marked the junior forward's sixth point in three games.
Guttman, Pettersen and Lukosevicius have been on the ice for five of Denver's 14 goals this season. Lukosevicius and Pettersen are both on three-game point streaks with four and six points, respectively.
The Pioneers finished 1/7 on the power play and 4/5 on the penalty kill.
