Pioneers Defeat Alberta, 6-4

DENVER – The Denver Pioneers defeated the Alberta Golden Bears, 6-4, in an exhibition on Saturday in Magness Arena.

Freshmen Cole Guttman and Emilio Pettersen both logged three-point games, while freshman defenseman Slava Demin had a pair of assists.

Michael Davies opened the scoring at 7:14 of the first period, sending a shot from the point through traffic to make it 1-0. The Pioneers extended their lead with less than two minutes remaining in the period as Pettersen took a pass from Jarid Lukosevicius, spun to the front of the net and lifted the puck over the outstretched leg of Golden Bears goalie Zach Sawchenko.

The Pioneers saw their lead evaporate in the second period as the Golden Bears struck three times in the middle frame, including twice on the man advantage. Alberta cut the lead to 2-1 at 7:17 of the second, then added two power-play goals in 1:22 to take a 3-2 lead at 16:02 of the period. Denver would even the score three minutes later as Lukosevicius capitalized on a two-on-one rush with Pettersen, rifling a shot past the glove of Sawchenko.

Denver regained its momentum in the third period, starting with Ryan Barrow's power-play goal at 4:04 of the frame. After working the puck around the zone, Kohen Olischefski received a pass on the half-wall and sent a slap pass to the front of the net where Barrow corralled the feed and scored. Two minutes later, Pettersen stole the puck in the offensive zone and fired a shot into the top corner to give the Pioneers a 5-3 lead.

Alberta made it 5-4 on the power play at 14:12 of the third period, but Jaakko Heikkinen re-established Denver's two-goal lead shortly after with a tally on the rush to make it a 6-4 final.

Devin Cooley made 24 saves on 27 shots through the second period. Michael Corson made 12 saves on 13 shots in the third period. The Pioneers finished 2/5 on the power play and 6/9 on the penalty kill.

Denver is set to open the regular season on Friday, Oct. 12 at Air Force.
