DENVER – Devin Cooley turned aside 38 shots in his second career shutout as the No. 7 Denver Pioneers (6-2-1, 3-2-0-0) upset the No. 1 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (8-2-1, 2-1-0-0) 2-0 on Friday in Magness Arena.
Ian Mitchell and
Jarid Lukosevicius scored for Denver in a game where the teams combined for 38 penalty minutes and the Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers, 38-14.
"I really liked the way we finished the game," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "The last 12 minutes I would say….you saw us start to take over the game with our feet and our puck pressure. You don't draw it up that way and they don't happen that way very often, but we're certainly happy with the win."
Denver started the night on the penalty kill as
Brett Stapley was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind only 21 seconds into the game. Shortly after, Lukosevicius drew a holding penalty to cut the man advantage and help the Pioneers head into the first intermission scoreless.
The Pioneers broke through on the power play at 9:49 of the second period as
Liam Finlay fed
Ian Mitchell for a blast from the point. Two minutes later,
Devin Cooley denied Koby Bender on a breakaway to keep Denver's lead. Mitchell's goal, which would prove to be the game-winner, gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead through two periods.
Minnesota Duluth pushed Denver in the third period, but Cooley stood strong turning aside 13 shots in the frame to hold the lead. Lukosevicius capped the game with an unassisted empty-netter at 19:23 after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and firing a shot as he fell to the ice.
Denver finished 1/5 on the power play and 5/5 on the penalty kill.
