No. 7 Denver Ties No. 9 Providence, 4-4

DENVER – The No. 7 Denver Pioneers (7-3-2, 3-3-0-0) tied the No. 9 Providence Friars (7-4-2, 4-2-0) 4-4 on Saturday in Magness Arena.

Denver rallied to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the second period and 4-3 deficit in the third period to force the tie and move to 6-1-2 on home ice. Freshmen led the way for the Pioneers as Filip Larsson made 42 saves in his NCAA debut and Cole Guttman, Emilio Pettersen and Tyler Ward each scored.

"For the first two periods, I don't think you saw Denver hockey," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle said. "As poor as we thought we played in the first two periods, it was nice to see our power play respond and our team respond in the third period and play as a group of five on the ice."

Providence opened the scoring at 6:13 of the first period when Jack Dugan picked up a pass at the red line and weaved into the offensive zone before beating Filip Larsson to make it 1-0. Guttman responded for the Pioneers only seven seconds later, taking a feed from Sean Comrie before beating Hayden Hawkey to the glove side.

The Friars regained the lead at 5:47 of the second period as Josh Wilkins found a loose puck outside the crease and slipped it past Larsson.  Kasper Bjorkqvist added another on the power play at 5:47 of the frame, scoring on his own rebound.

After taking a 3-1 lead, Providence went on the defensive. Brandon Duhaime was issued a five-minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head at 6:18 of the second period, resulting in a five-minute power play for the Pioneers. Emilio Pettersen struck first for Denver at 9:07 of the period, then Tyler Ward added another 42 seconds later on a goal-mouth scramble to tie the game 3-3. Both goals came on the man advantage.

Greg Printz put the Friars back in front at 4:34 of the third period with a rebound from Michael Callahan's shot, but Denver responded quickly for the second time in the night with Jaakko Heikkinen's wraparound goal only 20 seconds later. The score would hold through the remainder of regulation.

The Pioneers best chance in overtime came during the final minute when Pettersen slipped a pass across the goal for Jarid Lukosevicius, but Hawkey made the stop to preserve the tie.

Denver finished 2/8 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill.
