IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Denver men's basketball team fell to hot UC Irvine on Saturday, losing 86-52 in Bren Events Center. The loss snapped the Pioneers' two-game winning streak and dropped them to 4-8 on the season, while the Anteaters improved to 10-2.
Joe Rosga finished with 11 points, bringing the senior within three points of seventh place on the all-time scoring list.
Donoven Carlisle chipped in with a career-best 11 points off the bench to go with six rebounds.
UCI knocked down a school-record 18 3s, highlighted by a career night for Max Hazzard, who hit 10 himself on the way to a personal-best 32-point effort.
UC Irvine set the tone early, opening with a 14-0 run that forced Denver to take a timeout a little over three minutes into the game. The Pioneers struggled against the Anteaters' size inside, going 0-for-8 on the offensive end.
DU got on the board after a jumper from
Taelyr Gatlin at the 15:22 mark.
The Anteaters pushed their lead to 31 after a layup from Hazzard, giving him 23 points in the opening half, a new career best.
UCI held on to the big lead going into the break, up 47-16.
Denver's 16 points in the period were a new season low.
In the second half, UC Irvine opened fast again, going on 11-4 run to extend its lead to 38.
The Pioneers went young after that, playing for experience. They got solid minutes from
David Nzekwesi and
Joseph Lanzi, who combined for 17 points off the bench.
