DENVER – The University of Denver women's gymnastics team welcomed fans to Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday for the team's annual Crimson & Gold Intrasquad. The event gave the Pioneers the chance to compete in front of judges and a crowd ahead of the 2019 season opener in January.
Junior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) captured the all-around title with a 39.575. She also added the team's top scores on bars (9.925), beam (9.900) and floor (9.900). Sophomore
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) had the highest vault score with a 9.875.
Brown finished second in the all-around, and sophomore
Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.) was third.
Other top scores from the night included a 9.875 on bars from sophomore
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.), a 9.800 on beam from senior
Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) and a 9.875 from Brown on floor.
Saturday's meet also marked the first time for fans to see freshmen
Natalie Morton (Waycross, Ga.),
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) and
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) in action.
A couple Pioneers also returned to competition on Saturday. Senior
Grace Broadhurst (Broomfield, Colo.) appeared on bars, and junior
Courtney Loper (West Des Moines, Iowa) was on beam and floor.
"We're further along this year than we were at this time last year," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said after the event. "We had a great strategy going in to tonight about which athletes should be doing what, and it also gave other athletes experience as well."
The Pioneers will open their 2019 campaign on January 11 at Alabama with Michigan and Bowling Green. DU will host its home opener on January 19 against Central Michigan, Sacramento State and Texas Woman's.
