DENVER – Denver Pioneers men's hockey sophomore defenseman
Ian Mitchell has been selected to participate in Hockey Canada's Sport Chek Selection Camp in advance of the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship to be held from Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
Thirty-four players vying for 23 roster spots were picked for the camp, including 12 defensemen. The camp will take place from Dec. 10-14 in Victoria, B.C. with the final roster expected to be announced at its conclusion.
In his sophomore season, Mitchell leads Pioneer defensemen with 11 points (2-9-11), seven power-play points, two game-winning goals and 22 blocked shots in 12 games. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect registered 30 points (2-28-30) in 41 games during his freshman season. Mitchell, a Calahoo, Alberta native, has previously represented Canada at the 2015 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, the 2016 World Junior "A" Challenge and the 2017 IIHF U-18 World Championship. He also represented his country at the Sport Check World Junior Showcase last summer, recording two goals and three assists in four games.
TOGETHER 4 COLORADO TOY DRIVE
The Pioneers have partnered with CBS4 for the Together 4 Colorado Toy Drive to support the Denver community during the holiday season. Beginning Nov. 17, there will be toy drops at every Denver Athletics and Newman Center event thru Dec. 19. Additionally, there will be a Community Shop 'n Drop on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., hosted by the Denver Cheerleading squad at the circle drive on the north side of the Ritchie Center.
