DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball team got off to a hot start and never looked back, knocking off Western Colorado 93-69 on Sunday in Hamilton Gymnasium. The win snapped a four-game slide for the Pioneers and improved their record to 3-7 on the season.
The Denver offense found itself in a groove on the afternoon, finishing with season highs in points (93) and assists (18).
Tory Stewart-Miller had his best game yet in a DU jersey, finishing with a season-high 18 points in limited minutes, highlighted by some major dunks down in the post.
Ronnie Harrell Jr. racked up his third double-double this year with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Joe Rosga made some personal history, becoming the seventh player in Crimson and Gold history to make 200 3s in a career after going 3-for-5 from deep.
Denver go the start it was looking for, jumping out to a commanding 17-2 start against Western Colorado. The Pioneers got a hot start from Rosga, who knocked down his first three 3s.
Western Colorado made a run late, cutting the Pioneer lead to four after a 3 from Cole Sienknecht with just under three minutes left in the half.
DU, though, held off the big run, pushing its lead back to eight at the break, 45-36.
The 45 points were the most that the Crimson and Gold have scored in the first 20 minutes of action this season.
In the second half, Denver set the tone early that it meant business.
A big two-hand jam from Stewart-Miller jumpstarted the Pioneers, sending the team on an 8-0 run that was highlighted by Harrell Jr. and Stewart-Miller dunks.
Denver got its lead back up to 20 after a tip-in from
David Nzekwesi at the 12:12 mark, giving the freshman his first points of the contest en route to a 10-point day from the big man.
The Mountaineers never got any closer than that the rest of the way, going cold in the period and finishing shooting just 11-for-33 from the field (33 percent) for the half.
