NEW YORK - University of Denver men's lacrosse close defender Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while teammate Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, the conference office announced on Monday.
Gaines caused two turnovers and picked up five ground balls in the Pioneers' seven-goal win over Providence on Saturday. The Denver junior led a Pioneer defense that has held all four BIG EAST opponents to six goals or less, to bring their season total in that statistic to six in 12 games. Gaines held his man to just 1-for-6 shooting and 2-for-6 shots on goal.
Sullivan scored two goals in the Pioneers 13-6 win at Providence on Saturday to give the Pioneers at least a share of their fifth-straight BIG EAST Conference crown. The Pioneer freshman was one of five players to score multiple goals for Denver in the game, the 14th time the Pioneers have done that since the start of the 2014 season.
