Colin Staub Named Captain for 2018-2019 Season

Jarid Lukosevicius, Tyson McLellan and Ian Mitchell Named Alternates

DENVER – Colin Staub has been named captain for the 2018-2019 season, while Jarid Lukosevicius, Tyson McLellan and Ian Mitchell will serve as alternates, Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle announced on Tuesday.

Staub replaces previously named captain Logan O'Connor who signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche on July 23.

"First, I would like to congratulate Logan on behalf of our team. We are very excited for him and wish him the best with this opportunity," Staub said. "I am very excited and proud to be named captain. There has been a strong tradition of great captains to come before me and I can only hope to fill their shoes. With such a strong coaching staff and leadership group, our team is very excited to face the challenges that lie ahead and I am looking forward to doing what I can to help our team face them."

In three seasons, Staub has recorded 51 points (22-29-51) and six (6) penalty minutes in 117 career games. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native recorded 22 points (7-15-22) and two (2) penalty minutes in 41 games last season. In February, Staub was named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and recognized as an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. He is a two-time winner of the Dr. Ken Bredesen Award, annually awarded to the Pioneers' most sportsmanlike player.

Lukosevicius enters his senior season as the Pioneers' active leading scorer with 76 points (43-33-76) and 34 penalty minutes in 118 career games. Last season, the Squamish, British Columbia native finished fourth in scoring with 34 points (21-13-34) and led the squad with 11 power-play goals as well as 158 shots. Lukosevicius has posted seven (7) goals and one (1) assist in nine (9) NCAA Tournament games, notching a hat trick in the 2017 National Championship game and being named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 Frozen Four.

McLellan has 19 points (8-11-19) in 58 games with the Pioneers. Last season, the San Jose, Calif. native posted eight (8) points (3-5-8) and led the team with a 60.9% faceoff percentage despite playing only 15 games due to an injury.

In his freshman season, Mitchell recorded 30 points (2-28-30) in 41 games to lead all defensemen and finish fifth in team scoring. The Calahoo, Alberta native led the team with 19 power-play assists and 54 blocked shots, posted the second-most points among NCAA freshmen defensemen (30) and finished second in the NCAA with 19 power-play assists. He was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for NCHC Rookie of the Year. Mitchell is the first sophomore alternate captain since Tyler Ruegsegger held the title during the 2007-2008 season.

"We are excited about the leaders these young men will be for our program," Carle said. "They all have a great understanding of what it means to be a Pioneer and there is no doubt in the minds of our staff that they will show our team the way next season."
