Joensuu Qualifies to Represent Finland at Junior World Ski Championships

DENVER – University of Denver senior Nordic skier Jasmi Joensuu has qualified to represent her native country Finland in the upcoming Junior World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland. Joensuu will join over 700 participants hailing from 40 different nations at the championships which take place from January 20-27.

"Right before I came to Denver, I skied my last junior world championships in Kazakhstan about four years ago," said Joensuu. "The chance to represent Finland in my last U23 World Championships in Lahti in front of my family and friends, really means a lot. Furthermore, I am proudly representing DU as it has been such a big part of my life the last 3 years."

Joensuu credited her teammates from Denver and her head coach Dave Stewart for her growth since arriving on campus.

"A big thanks goes to my awesome teammates and amazing coach David, who has been pushing me throughout these years. This accomplishment would not be possible without them. My ultimate goal for the time in Denver was to make myself a bit better skier every year. It is really great to see that I have managed to improve myself not only as a skier but also as a person. I am looking forward to join the team after the races in Lahti and ready to help Denver to bring another NCAA Championship home."

Stewart, who will look to help Denver to a record 25th national championship this March, has seen the progression from Joensuu throughout the season.

"Jasmi has prepared well for this season and qualifying to represent Finland at the World Championships was a big goal for her," Stewart said. "She's already been part of two NCAA Championship-winning teams at Denver and twice on the podium at US National Championships, so this is another major accomplishment in Jasmi's career."

The opening ceremonies will take place on January 21 at 4:45 p.m. More information about the event can be found here - https://jwsc2019.com/#main-container and results will be posted here - https://www.fis-ski.com/.
