Alumni Q&A: Rod Summers

Tied for second in school history in all-time games played, Rod Summers suited up for the Crimson & Gold 164 times from 1986-1990. The defenseman notched 17 goals and 67 assists before earning his degree from the University of Denver. Today, Summers owns a food brokerage business in Denver and continues to instill himself in the fabric of the hockey program through his active support of the current student-athletes and coordination of alumni events.

Where are you originally from?

White Rock, B.C.

Why did you choose to attend the University of Denver?

It was the best school to combine hockey and academics and the weather here is so much better than Grand Forks and Michigan.

What is your favorite memory from your time with the Pioneers?

Playing home games with the crazy bleacher creatures student section. There are so many great memories, so it's hard to just list one.

Where are you living and what are you doing now?

I live in Denver and have since graduation, owning a food brokerage business.

How did your time at the University of Denver prepare you for life after hockey?

Playing hockey and going to school was a ton of work, but it prepared me to multi-task and prioritize my time. Playing hockey was such a great training ground for team work and leading a sales force to reach the same goals.

What advice do you have for the current Pioneers about life after college?

My advice would be to enjoy your experience, to not take your time at school for granted as it goes by very fast and you will miss it every day once it's over. These are the best years of your life, don't leave anything on the table. Go all in.
