Every Swim Matters in Women’s 103-102 Win over FIU

The Pioneers swept their two Saturday sessions in the final day of the 2019 Dual-A-Pool-Ooza

MIAMI – The University of Denver women's swimming and diving team completed a perfect Saturday and capped off a 2-1 weekend in Miami with a 103-102 win over FIU on Saturday afternoon at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.

Denver won six events overall in the session (FIU, Tulane, Rice) and six in the dual against FIU.

The Pioneers made it a perfect three-for-three on the weekend in the medley relays when sophomore Natalie Arky (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), sophomore Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.), senior Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) and senior Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) outswam the field with a 48.37 in the 100 medley relay.

Trailing by six after the 1200 open water free, Denver regained the lead with a 13-6 edge in the 200 breast. Junior Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) led the trio of Pioneer scorers in the event, taking first overall in the meet with a 2:16.49. Junior Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) took third to earn three points and classmate Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) took fifth for an additional point for the Pioneers.

Denver's lead grew to 10 after a first, third and fourth place finish in the 50 free. Valette clocked in at 23.64 to win the event, Lingen reached the wall in third with a 24.31 and junior Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario) finished fourth in 24.40.  Senior Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) earned the Pioneers another victory in the 200 fly with a 2:01.45

FIU trimmed the Denver lead down to three until Vu reached the wall in first in the 50 breast in 29.40. Freshman Sophia Bricker (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added her name to the scoring with a fourth place finish in 30.37 to help push Denver's lead back to six points.

With the diving scores already completed, and FIU taking the lead, Denver's 400 free relays came up with clutch swims and gave the Pioneers the one-point victory. Valette, Leckie, sophomore Livi Schmid (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Lingen clocked in at 3:26.23. Denver's B relay of freshman Sofia Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.), Vu, Melissa Funes (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman Erika Remington (Cedarburg, Wis.) outswam FIU's B relay by 6.5 seconds to take the deciding two points of the dual.
